New Windows 11 feature will make using handheld gaming devices and small tablets easier: Ability to force apps to open in full screen coming soon

Microsoft is developing a new Windows 11 feature that automatically opens all applications in maximized mode by default. Currently discovered in the latest Windows 11 preview builds and first spotted by user phantomofearth, the feature appears as a new toggle in the Accessibility settings labeled “Automatically open app windows maximized when they open.”

Once enabled, the feature will eliminate the need for users to manually maximize each app window upon opening. This addresses a particular usability challenge for users of handheld gaming devices and small tablets running Windows, where screen real estate is limited and windowed mode is less practical. The feature provides users with full control through a simple toggle switch, allowing them to choose whether they want all apps to default to maximized or maintain the current windowed behavior.

The discovery of this accessibility-focused feature in preview builds suggests Microsoft is listening to feedback from handheld Windows device users and small tablet owners who have experienced friction with the default windowed behavior.
