Double Fine Boss Breaks Silence on ‘Brütal Legend 2’
Tim Schafer, head of Double Fine Productions, confirmed during an August 21 appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily that the studio is not currently working on a Brütal Legend sequel. When directly asked “Brütal Legend 2 when?” by a stream viewer, Schafer stated: “We’re not working on that now. But maybe someday. I mean, there’s a lot there to work with. But we just, right now, we’re going to make a whole bunch of crazy little weird things.”
The statement comes as Double Fine has regained independence following its separation from Microsoft’s Xbox Game Studios. Rather than pursue major franchise sequels, the studio intends to focus on developing experimental and unconventional smaller-scale projects.
However, Schafer acknowledged potential obstacles to creating a new Brütal Legend game, noting the complications surrounding licensing agreements with heavy metal icons featured in the original title, including Ozzy Osbourne. Such licensing hurdles could pose significant barriers to reviving the franchise in the future.
The original Brütal Legend, released in 2009, was an action game set in a heavy metal-themed world featuring numerous real-world rock and metal musicians. While Schafer did not rule out a sequel entirely, his comments suggest Double Fine’s creative priorities currently lie elsewhere, reflecting a broader trend among independent developers seeking creative freedom.
