Can the Epic Games Store turn things around? ‘I don’t see how they can recover at this point,’ says Newzoo analyst
Epic Games is attempting to revitalize its struggling digital storefront through a comprehensive launcher overhaul and expanded feature set. The company announced plans in February to modernize the Epic Games Store, with a June update revealing that the launcher would start five times faster on average following performance optimizations.
The improvements aim to address longstanding pain points by introducing personalized game recommendations, quick-access categories, and integrated patch notes directly on the storefront. These enhancements represent features that would have been expected at the platform’s 2018 launch but have taken years to implement.
However, industry analysts remain skeptical about whether these upgrades can reverse the Epic Games Store’s fortunes. Emmanuel Rosier, director of market intelligence at Newzoo, expressed significant doubt about the platform’s ability to recover from its current position, suggesting that adding features and improving technical performance may be too little, too late.
The Epic Games Store has faced persistent challenges in competing with established platforms like Steam. Despite massive investment and exclusive game deals, the platform has struggled to build a compelling user experience and community. The delayed arrival of basic features has hindered its adoption among players and publishers.
The analyst’s pessimistic assessment reflects broader industry concerns about whether Epic can overcome years of accumulated disadvantages. While planned improvements demonstrate continued commitment to the storefront, questions remain whether technical fixes and feature additions can address deeper market positioning issues and restore confidence among the gaming community.
