Twitch faces a class action lawsuit over using streamers’ content to train Amazon’s AI

A Twitch streamer has initiated a proposed class action lawsuit against Twitch and its parent company Amazon, alleging the platforms used streamer content without permission or compensation to train generative AI models. Warren Pandiscia, a Twitch creator with approximately 1,000 followers, filed the 37-page complaint in the Northern District of California.

The lawsuit claims Twitch and Amazon unlawfully copied vast quantities of streamer footage without securing proper licenses. According to the filing, this constitutes a breach of the implied agreements between creators and the platform, as well as a violation of state unfair competition law.

The case raises significant questions about creators’ rights and intellectual property protections on streaming platforms. The complaint represents a potential class action that could encompass numerous other Twitch streamers whose content may have been similarly used for AI training without their knowledge or consent. This action reflects broader industry concerns about how companies are accessing and utilizing user-generated content to train machine learning models, particularly without creator compensation or explicit permission.
