Both AMD and Intel’s desktop CPU sales are falling off a cliff but Ryzen is falling a little slower

Market research firm Mercury Research reports that desktop CPU shipments from both AMD and Intel experienced significant declines in the second quarter, with results described as ‘ugly’ despite growth in the broader CPU market. AMD’s Ryzen processors are declining at a slower rate than Intel’s offerings.

The downturn reflects broader challenges in the PC hardware market, where consumers are reluctant to upgrade systems. CPU deals alone are insufficient to drive purchasing decisions, as replacing a processor typically requires upgrading expensive components including motherboards, RAM, and cooling solutions. This high barrier to entry has dampened demand across the entire desktop CPU segment.

Both manufacturers face headwinds despite continued innovation and competitive pricing strategies. The decline occurs even as the overall CPU market experiences growth, suggesting the weakness is specific to desktop systems. This divergence highlights changing consumer priorities and the extended lifecycle of PC upgrades, with users opting to maintain existing systems rather than invest in new builds.
