Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 Switch 2 physical version is seemingly a code-in-box

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will mark the franchise’s return to Nintendo hardware for the first time in over a decade, launching on Switch 2 day-and-date with PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. However, the physical Switch 2 version will use a code-in-box distribution model, containing only a voucher for one-time eShop redemption rather than a game cartridge.

This approach permanently ties the game to the purchasing account and prevents secondary market resales or trades—a significant departure from traditional physical game releases. According to independent retailer Video Game Plus, this limitation is substantial enough that they plan not to stock the Switch 2 physical version.

The last Call of Duty title on a Nintendo console was Ghosts on Wii U in 2013, making this a notable 13-year gap for the franchise. While code-in-box releases have become increasingly common on Switch due to cartridge manufacturing costs and storage limitations, this distribution method reflects broader industry trends toward account-locked, digital-only purchases.

For consumers, the model presents trade-offs: it ensures instant access and prevents physical media degradation, but eliminates the ability to resell, trade, or gift physical copies—traditionally a key advantage of owning physical games. The decision highlights the ongoing tension between publisher control and consumer ownership rights in modern gaming.
