Double Fine Productions regains ownership of IP and publishing rights following independence from Xbox
Double Fine Productions has successfully reclaimed ownership of its intellectual property and publishing rights following its separation from Xbox Game Studios. The independence was secured as part of larger organizational restructuring at Microsoft, which triggered significant layoffs affecting over 3,200 employees across its gaming operations.
CEO Tim Schafer confirmed the studio’s regained autonomy during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games podcast, emphasizing the significance of this transition. He noted that while several of Double Fine’s existing titles currently retain Microsoft branding in their credits and storefront listings, these attributions will gradually be updated as administrative processes complete. According to Schafer, the recovery of publishing rights means that revenue from player purchases now directly benefits Double Fine’s continued operations and future game development.
Compulsion Games, another studio previously housed within Xbox Game Studios, was similarly spun out as independent operations, completing its official separation last week. Both studios now regain control over their creative and business direction.
Double Fine continues advancing its creative initiatives, including announcing the fifth edition of Amnesia Fortnight, a biennial internal game jam where small employee teams design and prototype new game concepts. The event represents the studio’s commitment to experimentation and innovation.
