‘Each event has to feel local and relevant to its market:’ Gamescom wants responsible expansion after record-breaking year
Gamescom 2026 has set new attendance and participation records, drawing over 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries to its flagship event in Cologne. The exhibition sold out 233,000 square meters of gross exhibition space, marking significant growth for the annual gaming industry conference.
The indie gaming sector saw particularly strong expansion, with the dedicated indie area growing 16 percent compared to 2025 and featuring games from more than 420 companies. This growth underscores the continued prominence of independent developers within the broader gaming industry landscape.
The record-breaking event comes as Gamescom has expanded its global footprint to span three events across different regions. The Cologne showcase remains the largest and longest-running iteration, hosting a week-long celebration of video game culture and production at the Koelnmesse exhibition centre along the Rhine.
Managing director Felix Falk of Gamescom’s co-organizing body was commenting on the event’s scale and growth trajectory. The record numbers reflect continued strong interest from the global gaming industry in participating in one of the sector’s premier annual gatherings.
