GTA 6 Leaks Don’t Matter, So Please Calm Down, Ex-Rockstar Director Says
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been hit by a significant leak campaign over the past week, with an account dubbed “CyberLeek” releasing 11 gameplay videos and a full map image across six days. Despite the leaks, which provide an extensive look at unreleased gameplay and assets, Rockstar parent company Take-Two is attempting to track down the perpetrators—subpoenaing Microsoft, Discord, and social media platforms including X/Twitter. The leaker remains active and undeterred, even running cryptocurrency-based polls to determine which content to release next.
However, former Rockstar technical director Obbe Vermeij, who worked on GTA 3, GTA: San Andreas, and GTA 4, has downplayed the impact, calling the leaks “a nothing burger.” Vermeij argues that Rockstar is intentionally maintaining its quiet stance as part of a deliberate marketing strategy designed to maximize hype for the game’s highly anticipated reveal. The developer has indicated that the leaks will not prompt Rockstar to alter its carefully planned marketing timeline.
Vermeij’s assessment suggests that Rockstar views the incident as a minor setback compared to previous controversies. He specifically drew parallels to the “Hot Coffee” scandal—a much more damaging PR crisis involving hidden sexual content in GTA: San Andreas that significantly impacted the franchise’s reputation.
Rockstar is proceeding with its exclusive gameplay reveal scheduled for Netflix on August 27, suggesting the company remains confident in the game’s prospects despite the unauthorized leaks.
