Pokémon Collector Poses as Buyer to Recover $4,000 Worth of Stolen Cards in ‘Vigilante’ Sting Operation

A Canadian Pokémon card collector took vigilante action to recover stolen merchandise after police declined to help. Emilio Kihien of Coquitlam was conducting what he believed was a routine sale of highly-graded, encapsulated Pokémon trading cards worth $4,000 when the buyers handed him counterfeit cash, grabbed the cards, and fled. Kihien pursued the thieves, even clinging to their getaway vehicle before falling onto the road and sustaining injuries including bruising and road rash.

When Kihien contacted police for assistance, authorities told him they were unable to help recover his stolen property. Unwilling to accept this response, Kihien orchestrated a sting operation posing as a buyer to track down and recover his cards. His determination to resolve the matter himself highlights the challenges collectors face when dealing with theft of high-value trading cards, as well as potential limitations in law enforcement resources for property crime cases involving collectibles.

The incident raises questions about the security risks inherent in arranging private sales of valuable items and the gaps that can exist between law enforcement capabilities and collector expectations when it comes to investigating theft cases.
