Pokemon’s Creators Are Ready to Officially Ditch a 30-Year-Old Series Tradition

Pokémon’s iconic turn-based battle system, a core mechanic for three decades, may be getting a significant overhaul as the franchise evolves. According to statements from Game Freak developers, the traditional battle rules that have defined the series since its 1996 debut could gradually transform in future mainline entries.

Pokémon Champions, a recently released title, was developed in part as a preservation project to maintain the classic turn-based battle rules for players who prefer them. Pokémon battle director Shigeki Morimoto and Pokémon Champions game director Kazumasa Iwao explained that the new game serves as a dedicated home for the traditional gameplay style while the main series potentially explores new directions.

Iwao acknowledged the challenge of changing such an established system, particularly for longtime players who have invested decades in the franchise. “There are people who’ve been playing since Red and Green, Gold and Silver — decades,” he noted. Rather than abruptly announcing major changes, Game Freak wanted to give these veteran players a space where the classic mechanics would remain unchanged.

The decision reflects a broader strategy to balance innovation with nostalgia. While the developers haven’t revealed specific details about what new battle systems might look like in future Pokémon games, this announcement signals that Game Freak is actively considering significant departures from the turn-based formula that has remained largely consistent throughout the franchise’s history. By creating Pokémon Champions as a repository for legacy gameplay, the studio is positioning itself to experiment with fresh approaches while protecting the experience longtime fans cherish.
