Pokémon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolves With Game-Changing Rules This Week
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is introducing a new competitive ruleset for Season 16, with significant restrictions designed around its central Mega Evolution mechanic. Starting Thursday, Ranked Battles will be limited to exclusively Pokémon capable of Mega Evolving, and Mega Stones will be the only permitted held items for competitors.
This represents a continuation of the game’s seasonal experimentation with restricted competitive environments. Season 14 previously limited competition to Flying-type Pokémon exclusively, while the preceding season restricted participants to Water-types only. Season 16’s focus on Mega Evolution aligns with the battle gimmick that serves as the core mechanic of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
Mega Evolution functions as a temporary battle transformation for certain Pokémon species who hold their designated Mega Stone items. The mechanic enhances the Pokémon’s appearance and significantly boosts their stats during combat. Only Pokémon in their final evolutionary stage are capable of Mega Evolving, though not every final evolution form currently has an available Mega Stone, which may influence team composition options for the upcoming season. The new restrictions create a focused competitive environment that forces players to build strategies around Mega Evolution rather than type coverage or other traditional team-building approaches.
