Two Former Xbox Studios Confirm Their Independence And Plans For The Future

Following Xbox’s announcement in July 2026 regarding studio separations, Double Fine has now officially confirmed the completion of its split from Microsoft. Studio head Tim Schafer announced the development during an appearance on the Kinda Funny Games podcast, revealing that Double Fine has successfully regained publishing rights to its entire back catalog.

A significant outcome of the separation is that revenue from Double Fine game sales will now directly benefit the studio rather than Microsoft. However, Schafer clarified that the transition will not be instantaneous—Xbox Game Studios may continue to be credited as the publisher on certain titles for an extended period as administrative processes complete.

This independence represents a major shift for Double Fine, which has operated under Microsoft ownership since 2019. The studio’s departure was part of Xbox’s broader restructuring initiative announced in July, which saw four studios—Double Fine, Compulsion Games, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs—separate from Xbox ownership.

The graduated transition approach, where Xbox Game Studios continues as publisher on legacy titles temporarily, suggests a pragmatic handoff rather than an immediate clean break. This development underscores ongoing industry shifts regarding studio independence and intellectual property control.
