25 Years Later, Anime’s First Cinematic Masterpiece Is Officially Returning to Theaters

Anime distributor GKIDS announced the acquisition of North American theatrical rights to Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, a landmark anime film that will receive a full theatrical re-release across the region in 2027. The news came during the annual Anime NYC expo, marking a significant moment for one of anime’s most acclaimed films.

The original 2001 U.S. theatrical release of Bloodlust was extremely limited, playing in only twelve theaters despite critical acclaim. The film was produced by Madhouse, one of the studio’s most celebrated projects. GKIDS’ new distribution deal will give far more audiences the opportunity to experience the film on the big screen.

In addition to the theatrical release, GKIDS plans to produce new physical home media editions of the film. More details about the specific release date and format will be announced at a later time. This re-release represents both a commercial opportunity and a form of preservation for an influential work in anime cinema that has maintained a devoted cult following for over two decades.
