The Witcher 4 Release Date Confirmed, Gamescom Songs of the Past Showcase Announced

CD Projekt Red has announced that The Witcher 4 is targeting a 2028 release window. The news came via a video message from joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski ahead of Gamescom 2026, marking the first concrete timeline provided for the highly anticipated sequel over a decade after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s 2015 release.

The studio emphasized the scale of the project, noting that more than 500 developers are working on what they describe as “the biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date.” Nowakowski acknowledged the lengthy wait, saying “I know it’s a bit of a wait, and you’d love to play it sooner, but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait.”

The announcement arrives as CD Projekt Red prepares to showcase The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s new expansion, Songs of the Past, at Gamescom. While The Witcher 4 itself will not receive a showcase at the event, the developer teased “a surprise or two” during Gamescom livestreams throughout the week. Songs of the Past is scheduled to release in 2027, providing new content for players before The Witcher 4’s arrival.

The 2028 target represents the first official release window after CD Projekt Red previously stated the game would not launch by the end of 2026. The company has described The Witcher 4 as featuring “a huge and immersive open world, intense and action-packed gameplay, and a deep impactful story.” If CD Projekt meets this timeline and maintains its stated plans, the developer has indicated a goal to release the entire new Witcher trilogy—featuring protagonist Ciri—within a six-year window, potentially placing The Witcher 5 in 2031 and The Witcher 6 in 2034.
