Xbox and PlayStation Appear to Be Publicly Backing Down from Promoting Multiplatform Releases

Xbox and PlayStation appear to be shifting their marketing strategies to downplay multiplatform availability in their promotional materials. Xbox recently released a new trailer for Minecraft Dungeons 2 that notably omits any mention of PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch 2 availability, a stark departure from previous trailers released in March and June, which clearly advertised all planned platforms.

This strategic shift appears connected to Xbox’s direction under CEO Asha Sharma. The change extends beyond marketing messaging—earlier this summer, Xbox reportedly canceled development of the PlayStation 5 version of Gears of War: E-Day entirely, indicating a more significant pivot away from multiplatform support.

While the titles remain multiplatform releases, the decision to minimize multiplatform visibility in official marketing represents a notable reversal of industry trends emphasizing broad platform availability. This approach may reflect intensified console competition and a renewed focus on platform-specific ecosystem promotion rather than highlighting games’ broader accessibility.
