Bohemia Will Return to Single-Player ‘DNA’ in Arma 4

Bohemia Interactive has acknowledged the critical absence of single-player content in Arma Reforger and committed to returning single-player gameplay to the franchise’s DNA with Arma 4. During a presentation at Gamescom Dev, the studio’s Executive Producer Natalia Agafonova addressed the community’s disappointment over the multiplayer-only focus of Arma Reforger.

Arma Reforger launched in early access in June 2022 as the foundation for Arma 4 and served as a testbed for Bohemia’s new Enfusion engine. However, the launch was problematic, with the game failing to gain traction in its first year, struggling to maintain more than a few hundred concurrent players on Steam. The multiplayer-only design left solo players feeling abandoned, contributing to the game’s rough start.

Agafonova acknowledged the disappointment, stating “We really disappointed them,” referring to players who expected single-player experiences alongside the multiplayer offering. After recognizing the misstep, Bohemia committed to a full operational reset, dedicating over a year to revitalizing the project. These efforts have successfully brought Arma Reforger back to life and restored community confidence.

The commitment to restoring single-player content represents a return to core franchise elements that have always defined the Arma series. Bohemia’s willingness to acknowledge its mistakes and refocus on the franchise’s fundamental identity suggests the studio has learned valuable lessons from Reforger’s challenging launch, positioning Arma 4 as a more complete experience that honors both the multiplayer and single-player traditions of the series.
