EU games industry generated €24bn in 2024, studios reached 6,600 and workforce exceeded 95,000

The European games industry generated €24 billion in combined turnover in 2024, according to the European Video Game Industry Insights Report published by the European Games Development Association (EGDF) and Video Games Europe (VGA). The sector comprises over 6,600 studios employing more than 95,000 people across the continent.

The report, which consolidates data from 28 EGDF member countries, reveals mixed growth trends for the region. While the number of studios expanded by between 5% and 10% in 2024—indicating industry expansion and ongoing entrepreneurial activity—growth in the continent’s talent base stalled during the same period. This divergence suggests new studios are being established despite challenges in recruiting and retaining skilled workers.

The EGDF and VGA compile their annual insights report by gathering individual data from member countries and then consolidating the information into comprehensive European figures. This methodology means the published report reflects data from the previous calendar year due to necessary compilation timelines. The €24 billion figure underscores Europe’s significance as a major global games development hub, with both established gaming nations and emerging markets contributing to the region’s economic output. However, the stalling talent growth raises questions about the industry’s ability to sustain expansion without addressing workforce challenges in the coming years.
