Game of Thrones RTS War for Westeros just got a first gameplay trailer confirming some familiar faces
Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, the real-time strategy title based on HBO’s acclaimed fantasy series, has revealed its first gameplay footage at Gamescom Opening Night Live. Developer PlaySide Studios showcased the RTS mechanics, confirming playable factions including House Stark, House Lannister, House Targaryen, and the White Walkers—with hero units from the television series like Jon Snow, Jaime Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and the Night King featured prominently in battle.
Originally announced at Summer Game Fest 2025 and initially scheduled for 2026, the game has been delayed to Spring 2027. Players will command armies across the Seven Kingdoms in “ruthless free-for-all battles” where they can forge strategic alliances or employ deception against rivals in their bid to claim the Iron Throne. The gameplay emphasizes hero characters leading battalions in combat to control castles and territory, drawing comparisons to classics like Warcraft 3 and The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth.
One of the game’s key appeals is the opportunity for players to rewrite Game of Thrones’ canonical endings—the trailer notably ends with the Night King seated on the Iron Throne, offering scenarios that diverge from the HBO series’ conclusion. A playable beta is planned before the full release, with specific timing to be announced later this year. War for Westeros is confirmed as a PC exclusive.
