Rovio Copenhagen to close after Sonic Blitz cancellation

Sega-owned Rovio is closing its Copenhagen studio following the cancellation of Sonic Blitz, a runner-CCG hybrid mobile game. The studio closure comes as part of an ongoing redundancy process that will affect approximately 20 employees who were working on the cancelled project.

Rovio stated that it will discontinue all operations in Denmark. While the exact number of redundancies has not yet been finalized, around 20 staff members were involved in the development of Sonic Blitz. For employees who cannot be reallocated to other positions within Rovio, the company plans to provide comprehensive support packages, including dedicated outplacement services and wellbeing support to assist them in finding future employment opportunities.

The company characterized the decision to shut down its Copenhagen operations as “extremely difficult.” This closure reflects the ongoing challenges in mobile gaming, where live-service titles require sustained investment and player engagement to remain commercially viable.
