Over 30 Years Later, an Underrated SNES RPG Masterpiece Is Finally Getting a US Release

Terranigma, a legendary action-RPG from 1995 for the Super Nintendo, is finally receiving an official release outside Japan after more than 30 years. Developed by Quintet and published by Enix, the game was released in Japan in 1995 and later in Europe and Australia in 1996, but never officially launched in North America despite plans for an English localization. The release was cancelled when Enix’s US subsidiary closed before the game could come to market.

The title has long been considered an underrated gem among SNES enthusiasts, standing alongside iconic RPGs like Final Fantasy IV and VI, EarthBound, and Chrono Trigger. The game features real-time combat with spear-based mechanics and is regarded as a masterpiece by those who have experienced it, though its lack of North American availability left many Western players unaware of its existence.

Now, nearly 31 years after its original release, Terranigma is coming to PC through a collaboration between Clear River Games Development and Limited Run Games. This re-release marks a significant moment for game preservation, finally giving Western audiences—particularly those on PC—the opportunity to experience the acclaimed title officially. The re-release represents an important step in preserving gaming history, ensuring that overlooked classics aren’t relegated to obscurity or emulation.
