Double Fine Productions Makes Brutal Legend Free for 666 Minutes to Honor Tim Curry
Tim Curry, the legendary actor and voice performer, has died at the age of 80. To honor his passing, Double Fine Productions has made its 2009 heavy metal action-adventure game Brütal Legend available for free on PC via itch.io.
The free offer is available for exactly 666 minutes—a fitting nod to the game’s heavy metal aesthetic—concluding at 3:06am PT/6:06am ET on August 27. Curry voiced Doviculus, the game’s main antagonist and Emperor of the Tainted Coil, a character originally conceived for heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio.
Curry’s distinctive voice work became iconic across gaming, film, and television. Beyond Brütal Legend, he lent his talent to numerous video game roles, including Gabriel Knight, Premier Anatoly Cherdenko in Red Alert 3, and Arl Howe in Dragon Age: Origins.
The timing of Double Fine’s tribute coincides with the studio’s recent return to independence. Following Microsoft’s Xbox reset, which led to the separation of several studios from the company, Double Fine regained the rights to its entire catalog, including the beloved Brütal Legend.
The 666-minute free promotion allows fans to download and permanently own the game during this limited window, serving as both a memorial to Curry’s contributions to gaming and a celebration of his unforgettable performance as the villainous Doviculus.
