Gamescom’s Best Video Game Trailer Arms Yakuza with American Flags

Gamescom 2026, Europe’s largest video game showcase, kicked off this week with a comprehensive two-hour presentation featuring both new and previously announced titles. The showcase included fresh looks at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation and The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, along with debut trailers for Hoyoverse’s Elden Ring-inspired action RPG Nodusfall and the long-rumored Lego Skylines.

Among the diverse lineup, China-based developer Nekcom Entertainment’s Showa American Story emerged as a standout moment. This single-player RPG, launching on PC and PlayStation 5, presents an intriguing alternate-history setting: a 1980s United States where Japan has achieved significant cultural colonization of America. Players assume the role of Choko, a protagonist who has been resurrected to undertake a classic American cross-country road trip, promising an unconventional blend of Japanese and American cultural elements.

The game’s unique premise—combining the Americana road-trip narrative with alternate-history speculation and Japanese cultural aesthetics—positioned it as one of Gamescom’s most surprising announcements.
