I added a gang notoriety system to GTA 5, but it mostly seems to make them murder everyone except me
A modder has created a “Gang Notoriety” system for Grand Theft Auto 5 designed to give gang AI more persistent behavior. In the base game, gang members quickly lose interest in the player after combat, displaying what one observer called relative “forgiveness.” The mod aims to change this by making gangs accumulate sustained anger and wanted levels toward the player, similar to how police mechanics work in the game.
However, the implementation has produced unexpected results. Rather than gangs specifically targeting the player with sustained hostility, the system has made gang members significantly more aggressive toward other NPCs. Gang members now appear to attack nearly everyone in their vicinity—with the notable exception of the player themselves.
This unintended consequence illustrates the complexity of modifying GTA 5’s AI systems. The modification intended to create persistent gang rivalries instead generated a scenario where gang members behave as generalized threats to the game world while sparing only the player from violence.
Despite diverging from the original intent, the modder characterizes the outcome positively, noting that it does alter the gameplay experience and creates new dynamics within the game world.
