GTA 6 Wants You To Reconsider Doing What Everyone Does In Grand Theft Auto
Rockstar Games has shared extensive details about Grand Theft Auto 6 ahead of its November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The preview, featured in Dazed magazine, reveals a significant shift toward roleplay mechanics and player consequence systems.
The game centers on two protagonists—Jason and Lucia—in a Bonnie and Clyde-inspired narrative. Players can control them together or independently, with character swapping mechanics that allow players to “play as a couple, or go off and cause chaos independently.” A notable returning feature from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the body system, where players’ actions directly impact protagonist appearance: eating affects weight, exercise builds and tones muscles, and lack of sleep visibly impacts their look.
Development of GTA 6 required substantial expansion at Rockstar Games. The studio doubled its workforce from approximately 2,000 to 4,000 employees since Red Dead Redemption 2’s release and opened a new Los Angeles office dedicated almost exclusively to NPC development. Rockstar also hired real-world professionals specializing in fashion, vehicles, and other design elements to enhance realism.
The game is positioned as Rockstar’s most grounded and realistic entry to date, building on mechanics established in Red Dead Redemption 2. The consequence-driven body systems and RPG-influenced mechanics represent a departure from traditional GTA gameplay, encouraging players to reconsider typical in-game rampages with lasting character impacts.
