Mega Man Dual Override Gameplay Shows Off Cool New Systems

Capcom has announced Mega Man: Dual Override, the first mainline entry in the classic Mega Man series since 2018’s Mega Man 11. The game was revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live and represents a return to the series’ 2D action-platformer roots while introducing new gameplay systems.

According to hands-on demonstrations at Gamescom, Dual Override maintains the core mechanics that define Mega Man—including the iconic arm cannon and charge functionality—while adding new features designed to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers. A key innovation is a power-up system that allows players to customize their experience by selecting different power-ups to adjust difficulty on the fly, making the game more accessible or challenging depending on player preference.

Video gameplay footage released by VGC shows nearly 10 minutes of the game running on Nintendo Switch 2, with footage from three playable stages. The visuals demonstrate Capcom’s commitment to the retro aesthetic while maintaining modern technical quality on the new hardware.

Industry coverage emphasizes that Capcom is taking a “don’t overthink it” approach, focusing on the tried-and-true platforming formula rather than attempting radical reinvention. Hands-on impressions describe the game as “uncompromisingly retro,” maintaining the original one-directional shooting mechanics that define the series, which some observers note may present a steep learning curve for players new to the franchise.
