You now have a bit more time before Microsoft takes away your Whiteboard
Microsoft has extended the deadline for users to migrate from legacy Microsoft Whiteboard to OneDrive-backed whiteboards, providing additional time before the standalone app is phased out.
According to Microsoft’s official announcement, the new retirement timeline includes three key dates: September 25, 2026 for completion of migration to OneDrive-backed whiteboards, October 16, 2026 for deletion of legacy whiteboards, and November 30, 2026 for deprecation of the standalone app. These updated dates represent a postponement from the company’s previous retirement schedule.
Microsoft Whiteboard is a digital collaboration and note-taking application widely used for sketching ideas, creating visual content, and team collaboration. The transition to OneDrive-backed whiteboards represents a shift toward cloud-integrated functionality, aligning with Microsoft’s broader strategy of leveraging cloud storage across its productivity suite.
Users with legacy whiteboards must take action before these deadlines to avoid losing access to their content. Microsoft is encouraging users to either migrate their content to OneDrive-backed whiteboards or export existing content locally. The company’s extension provides additional time for users to complete this transition at their own pace.
