More People Watch Hockey Thanks To Heated Rivalry, And This New Game Hopes To Benefit
Raccoon Logic, developer of the Savage Planet series, announced Breakaway Hockey League at Gamescom—a new 4v4 ice hockey game designed as a competitive, skill-focused experience. The game features five-minute ranked matches where players control a single team member rather than managing an entire roster, distinguishing it from traditional hockey simulations like EA’s NHL series.
The game emphasizes high-skill gameplay with mechanics including realistic puck physics, physical checking, and precision techniques such as dekes and accurate corner shots. Raccoon Logic is branding the experience with “larger-than-life spectacle,” positioning it as entertainment-focused competitive hockey.
Currently in development for PC, Breakaway Hockey League aims to capitalize on growing mainstream interest in ice hockey, driven by intensifying rivalries and higher viewership numbers. The announcement suggests the studio is betting on hockey’s rising cultural visibility to attract players to a more arcade-oriented, accessibility-focused take on the sport compared to simulation-heavy competitors.
