Ridley Scott Is Developing an Alien: Covenant Sequel With Michael Fassbender
Director Ridley Scott has confirmed that he is developing a third installment in his Alien prequel trilogy, which will serve as a sequel to 2017’s Alien: Covenant. In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Scott revealed that the film will center on Michael Fassbender’s character David, the android who has been central to the prequel series since his introduction in 2012’s Prometheus.
According to Scott, the new film will follow David as he creates a “brave new world for himself.” The director indicated that the story will explore themes of artificial intelligence malfunctioning and going awry. Scott expressed his fascination with the character and the concept of rogue AI, noting that “AIs can go off. And if they do, it’s like a bomb.” The director has been vocal about his concerns regarding the advancement of artificial intelligence, preferring to make films that explore these themes rather than utilize AI in his own creative process. He expressed confidence that he could currently “compete with an AI without any problem,” but voiced worry about a future where the technology becomes “smarter than we are.”
The confirmation of this sequel will be welcomed by fans who have been awaiting a resolution to Alien: Covenant’s cliffhanger ending. Scott’s commitment to continuing the Alien franchise demonstrates his ongoing interest in the series, which he launched with the original 1979 film.
