How Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons Is Expanding D&D’s Darkest Corner With New Monsters And Magic
Invoke Studios’ upcoming action-RPG Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is set to launch in 2027 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, marking a significant new entry in the D&D video game landscape. The game was revealed with extended gameplay footage at Gamescom Opening Night Live.
Set in Darkon, a Domain of Dread sealed away in the mists, the game follows Kaatri, a warlock who has made a dark pact with Tasha, an ancient witch, to gain the power needed to find someone she lost. Unlike traditional D&D experiences, players won’t roll dice but instead engage in real-time action-RPG combat within an exploration-driven open world featuring gothic cities, vast wilderness, and undead-filled landscapes.
Developed by a team of former Ubisoft veterans who worked on Far Cry, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell, Warlock embraces an unconventional approach to the D&D license. The game incorporates spell-collecting mechanics, giving players access to various charms, cantrips, and conjurations to gather and experiment with, emphasizing player choice and freedom through open-ended design.
Invoke Studios emphasized that Wizards of the Coast granted considerable creative freedom to expand the franchise into the Domains of Dread—described as one of D&D’s darker fantasy corners. The game will feature Xbox Play Anywhere support and is positioned as potentially the most significant AAA video game adaptation of D&D since Baldur’s Gate 3.
