The story for Witcher 3: Songs of the Past was actually written “years ago”, according to Fool’s Theory CEO
CD Projekt Red has officially revealed its third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past, coming to PC in 2027—more than a decade after the original game’s 2015 release. The expansion was showcased at Gamescom 2026, with developers confirming that a story written “years ago” will finally see the light of day after being set aside for various reasons.
The expansion centers on Geralt investigating the disappearance of Dandelion, his bard companion, in Letten—a bucolic countryside region in the north of the continent that serves as Dandelion’s ancestral homeland. What begins as a search for a missing friend quickly escalates into a mystery worthy of a Witcher, with developers noting the new region features “never-before-seen foes” and a significant departure from the base game’s often darker settings. Geographically, Letten is positioned close to where The Witcher 4 will be set, suggesting narrative connections between the expansion and the upcoming mainline sequel.
The expansion follows the proven formula of Blood and Wine, the acclaimed second expansion, offering a new region to explore, countless quests, and fresh enemies alongside familiar faces. Mechanically, it remains faithful to The Witcher 3 experience while introducing at least one new romanceable character and a new weapon for players. Notably, the expansion addresses a long-standing player request: the ability to pet dogs—a feature unavailable in the original game except for one specific mission.
Fool’s Theory, co-developer of the expansion, led the reveal, with world director Peter Gelencser confirming details about Letten’s placement within the game world. The expansion arrives as part of a broader Witcher 3 revival, with CD Projekt Red also releasing a full-game remaster to launch ahead of Songs of the Past, ensuring the nearly decade-old RPG remains fresh for both veteran and new players.
