Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital Programme Is Official, and It Starts Next Week
Microsoft has officially announced Xbox’s disc-to-digital program, a feature that allows players to convert physical game discs into digital licenses on their Xbox accounts. Beginning August 31st, Xbox Insiders—members of Microsoft’s free testing program—will be able to access this functionality on Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles.
The program works by leveraging unique keys encoded in physical game discs. When players insert a supported disc into their console and launch the game, the system automatically unlocks a digital entitlement tied to their Xbox account. This enables them to play the game without the physical disc and access additional digital benefits, including Xbox Play Anywhere (allowing PC play) and Xbox Cloud Gaming for remote access.
At launch, the program will support “most” Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, with Microsoft committing to expand the library over time. While the physical disc remains playable afterward, the digital license is bound to the account that redeemed it—if the disc is given to another person, the original account loses access.
Xbox VP Jason Ronald positioned the initiative as part of Microsoft’s “broader commitment to game preservation,” noting that as technology and distribution methods evolve, ensuring access to owned games becomes increasingly important. The announcement represents Microsoft’s proactive response to the industry’s shift toward all-digital gaming, particularly following Sony’s decision to discontinue PlayStation disc manufacturing for games released after January 2028.
While the program launches for Insiders next week, Microsoft has not yet announced a general release date for all Xbox players.
