Fable Was Previously Aiming for an October Launch, Director Reveals, Insisting That the Game’s Delay Wasn’t Due to Being ‘Scared of Other Big Games’

Playground Games’ forthcoming RPG Fable has been delayed from its original October 2026 release date to February 23, 2027. Director Ralph Fulton addressed the postponement at gamescom, expressing confidence about meeting the new deadline while clarifying the reasoning behind the decision.

According to Fulton, the rationale for moving the release date out of October is “pretty apparent to everybody.” The director characterized the October window as “chaotic” and emphasized that the delay was a deliberate strategic choice rather than a reaction to competing releases. Fulton specifically insisted the decision wasn’t motivated by being “scared of other big games,” directly addressing speculation about competition influencing the timing.

Despite his disappointment at missing a 2026 launch—noting he was “really looking forward to shipping this game this year”—Fulton indicated the team made the right call in moving to 2027. He acknowledged the trade-off of having to deliver another post-New Year speech to staff about shipping Fable in the coming year, but expressed satisfaction with avoiding the problematic October timeframe.

Playground Games appears confident about its February 2027 timeline, with Fulton’s comments suggesting the delay prioritizes getting the game into a better release window rather than addressing fundamental development concerns.
