Sebulba Did Nothing Wrong, Say Star Wars Galactic Racer Devs
Fuse Games is developing Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a racing title that aims to evolve the genre by blending traditional racing with roguelite elements and inspiration from Burnout. The game will feature the Galactic Racing League, exploring the racing culture within the Star Wars universe—a relatively underexplored aspect of the franchise.
At Gamescom, CEO Matt Webster explained the team’s vision to “move the genre forward,” combining extensive racing game experience with a passion for Star Wars. While Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace featured an iconic podrace sequence, recent Star Wars films and television have focused on more familiar mythology elements like lightsaber battles and space opera drama. Galactic Racer seeks to fill this gap while delivering narrative depth, with Webster noting that “Star Wars fans crave a story.”
Developer Nat Daw and Webster also playfully discussed the game’s treatment of prequel-era character Sebulba, the antagonist from young Anakin Skywalker’s podrace. When asked about the character’s cheating, Webster defended Sebulba, stating he “would probably take issue with” the accusation—suggesting the developers are taking a nuanced approach to Star Wars lore while modernizing the racing game genre.
