Germany’s President Warns Of Downsides To Gaming, Including Games With “Extremist Ideologies”
At Gamescom in Cologne, Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier acknowledged both the benefits and dangers of video gaming while addressing the industry event. While recognizing that games have become deeply integrated into modern society and offer positive effects on people and society, Steinmeier emphasized the importance of discussing the industry’s downsides in an objective and nuanced manner.
The president highlighted several concerns, including gaming addiction—citing warnings from the World Health Organization. Beyond addiction, he pointed to exposure many players face to harmful content, including brutality, raw violence, sexism, racism, and extremist ideologies in some titles. Steinmeier argued that the ubiquity of gaming makes it essential to examine these issues thoroughly and honestly.
His remarks reflect growing global conversations about gaming’s cultural impact, balancing recognition of the medium’s entertainment value and social benefits against concerns about content standards and player well-being. By calling for objective discussion rather than dismissing either the positives or negatives, Steinmeier positioned gaming as a topic worthy of serious societal examination.
