One of my most anticipated samurai games isn’t coming to Xbox (or Play Anywhere), but it finally locked in a release date for PC

Shadow of the Road, a computer role-playing game published by Owlcat Games, has locked in a November 12, 2026 release date for PC platforms. The game will launch simultaneously on Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, giving players multiple digital storefronts to purchase from.

Notably, the title will not be released on Xbox or through Microsoft’s Play Anywhere initiative, marking a significant platform limitation compared to some major releases. The game is developed by Owlcat Games, the studio known for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, suggesting a deep, narrative-driven RPG experience.

Set in a samurai-inspired world, Shadow of the Road places players in command of a group of ex-samurai and Shogun retainers. The story follows these warriors as they travel with a mysterious child who possesses unusual powers, the child’s mother, and a massive bodyguard in pursuit of an objective that remains partially unrevealed. This premise blends tactical combat with character-driven storytelling in a feudal Asian setting.

The announcement came during Gamescom 2026, with the confirmed release date marking a key milestone for the long-anticipated title. Though the full mechanics and narrative details remain largely under wraps, Owlcat Games’ proven expertise in creating systems-rich CRPGs with robust world-building suggests players can expect a substantive experience. The studio’s work on Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has established their reputation for delivering complex, choice-driven narratives and engaging tactical gameplay.
