Star Citizen Spinoff Squadron 42 Delayed to 2027, Dev Insists It’s Because of GTA 6

Squadron 42, the single-player campaign component of Star Citizen, has been delayed to Q2 2027. Developer Cloud Imperium Games had previously targeted 2026 for release, reaffirming this plan as recently as late 2025. CEO Chris Roberts announced the postponement, citing an unconventional reason: Grand Theft Auto 6’s fall launch would create an “attention buzz saw” that would overshadow Squadron 42’s debut and deprive it of adequate media coverage and player engagement.

The delay represents another setback in Squadron 42’s notoriously troubled development history. Originally planned for 2015, the star-packed space FPS has become infamous for repeated postponements over the past decade, embodying the broader issue of delayed game releases. Cloud Imperium’s decision to yield the fall window to GTA 6 reflects both confidence in the game’s eventual quality and acknowledgment of industry release calendar realities.

This move highlights how major blockbuster launches can reshape the gaming landscape. With GTA 6’s anticipated cultural dominance expected to dominate industry discourse and consumer attention throughout 2025, Cloud Imperium determined that launching Squadron 42 during that period would be strategically disadvantageous. The shift to mid-2027 allows the game a less competitive release environment.
