Alien Deathstorm Is A Fun Shooter That (So Far) Needs More Deathstorm

Alien Deathstorm, a new action-horror shooter from developer Rebellion, recently debuted at Gamescom with a gameplay trailer. GameSpot had the opportunity to go hands-on with the title and discovered a retro-feeling shooter with interesting mechanics centered around the game’s titular deathstorm phenomenon.

In Alien Deathstorm, players assume the role of a combat engineer who becomes stranded on a devastated off-world colony. The planet is simultaneously ravaged by a catastrophic environmental event called the “deathstorm” and overrun by aggressive hostile aliens. While developer Rebellion is keeping the planet’s specific location secret, the playable mission shown to media takes place within a dilapidated nuclear reactor facility.

Based on GameSpot’s hands-on preview, the game demonstrates solid potential as an action-oriented title with an engaging retro aesthetic. However, the reviewer noted that the deathstorm mechanics—which appear designed to be a central gameplay feature and unique hook—felt underutilized during the demo build, suggesting that the full game may showcase these distinctive mechanics more prominently than what was presented at Gamescom.
