Fable Dev Happy About Delay To 2027 To Avoid “Chaotic Window,” And We All Know That Means GTA 6

The new Fable game has been delayed from its originally planned October 2026 release to February 2027. In a recent Gamescom interview with IGN, Fable director Ralph Fulton revealed the initial launch target and explained the rationale behind the delay. Fulton stated he feels “great” about the new timing and emphasized that the shift to 2027 helps the game avoid the “chaotic window” of late 2026.

While Xbox and Playground Games didn’t explicitly name the reason for the delay when it was announced in May, the coverage makes clear that the move was designed to distance Fable from Grand Theft Auto 6’s fall 2026 launch. Fulton confirmed this tactfully in his interview, noting there’s “just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely” when discussing competition from other major titles. He expressed that he wasn’t happy about calling an all-hands meeting in January to announce the delay to his team, but acknowledged the decision was necessary.

The February 2027 release date gives Fable the breathing room it needs to launch without competing directly against one of the year’s most anticipated games. Fulton insisted the team isn’t generally “scared of other big games,” but GTA 6’s magnitude and the crowded late-2026 release window made avoidance the smart choice.

This delay represents a common strategy in the gaming industry, where publishers adjust release schedules to optimize market positioning. By moving Fable to early 2027, Playground Games aims to give the game its own spotlight and media coverage rather than being overshadowed during the industry’s most chaotic period for major releases.
