Fable’s Loot Is Meant To Be Meaningful, So Don’t Expect A Bunch Of Minor Upgrades
Playground Games is prioritizing meaningful loot design for the upcoming Fable reboot. In an interview at Gamescom 2026, creative directors Will Kennedy and Craig Littler explained the studio’s approach to equipment and rewards. Rather than bombarding players with minor incremental upgrades, the team wants players to feel like they’re earning significant rewards for overcoming challenges.
The studio plans to achieve this through variety in loot types, with particularly impactful equipment serving as major progression milestones. Kennedy stated the team’s design philosophy as wanting upgrades to be “meaningfully meaningful,” suggesting the developers are focused on creating loot that offers substantial power-level increases rather than trivial statistical improvements. This approach emphasizes quality over quantity in reward systems, ensuring that each piece of gear feels like a genuine achievement rather than a mere incremental step forward.
