Feature: GTA 6: With 30FPS Seemingly Confirmed, Is 60FPS Actually Realistic?
Grand Theft Auto 6 has been officially confirmed to run at 30 frames per second on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles, according to Rockstar’s Rob Nelson during press opportunities following the Extended Look gameplay reveal. The footage showcased on Netflix, YouTube, and through a downloadable file from Rockstar represents the target performance level for the game’s November launch.
Digital Foundry’s technical analysis found the PS5 version maintains a relatively stable 30 FPS output at native 1440p resolution, with only occasional single-frame drops. While uncertainty remains about a potential 60 FPS performance mode at or after launch, tech experts at Digital Foundry deemed a 60 FPS console version “extremely unlikely” and “genuinely challenging” given the game’s visual complexity.
The decision to prioritize 30 FPS appears driven by the game’s technical ambition. Experts praised GTA 6 as potentially the most visually impressive real-time rendering achievement in gaming, citing the scale of the technological accomplishment as comparable to the Apollo space programme. The game showcases groundbreaking character rendering, hair simulation, skin shading, and global illumination systems that push current console hardware to its limits.
