Voice actor Peter Cullen, the legendary voice of Optimus Prime, has passed away at age 85. News of his death was announced on Thursday, August 27, with Cullen having passed away the day prior.
Spanning over six decades, Cullen’s career was defined by his prolific voice work across television, film, and animation. He voiced hundreds of characters, including the beloved character Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh and, most notably, Optimus Prime—a role he maintained for more than four decades since the original Transformers animated series and the 1986 Transformers: The Movie.
His portrayal of Optimus Prime became iconic, with the noble Autobot leader becoming one of the most recognizable voiced characters in entertainment history. The character’s death scene in the 1986 film, where Optimus Prime assures his soldiers “Autobots, do not grieve. Soon, I shall be one with the Matrix,” has remained emotionally resonant with fans for 40 years.
News of Cullen’s passing has prompted tributes from fellow Transformers actors, who have lauded his contributions to the franchise and the entertainment industry at large. His colleagues have described him as a “prodigious talent” whose work left an indelible mark on multiple generations of audiences.
