Prime Video Is Adapting Stephen King’s 1980 Underrated Horror Short for a Six-Part Limited Series

Prime Video has greenlit a limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s “Crouch End,” a 1980 horror-science fiction short story. The six-part series represents a significant adaptation project for one of King’s relatively obscure works.

“Crouch End” originally appeared in the anthology New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos before being reprinted in King’s Nightmares & Dreamscapes short story collection. Written as an homage to H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror style, the story stands out among King’s bibliography for its London setting—a departure from the Maine locations that typically define his work.

The limited series centers on Doris Freeman, a global movie star who bursts into a London police station reporting strange phenomena connected to her husband’s disappearance. Police inspector Ted Vetter must investigate whether she is telling the truth or if something far stranger is occurring in the city.

The adaptation reflects Prime Video’s continued investment in literary adaptations and horror content. “Crouch End” remains relatively obscure compared to King’s more celebrated works, but its Lovecraftian elements and atmospheric London setting provide rich material for serialized television. The story’s short length makes it well-suited to a six-episode format.

This greenlight is part of a broader trend of streaming platforms developing Stephen King properties, with multiple adaptations currently in development across various services.
