Resident Evil 4 Remake ‘Chapter 0’ Released to Bring Back Cut Content
Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake has received cut content restoration through community effort. Data miners discovered evidence of a scrapped prologue chapter—“Chapter 0”—that originally followed Ashley as she fled from pursuers the night before protagonist Leon’s arrival in the village. While Capcom never completed this sequence during development, a modder has successfully reconstructed the missing chapter by combining leftover code and assets with existing in-game material.
The original RE4 remake already featured several notable enhancements from the classic 1998 original, including reworked sequences, reduced escort mission frustrations, and chainsaw parry mechanics. Most significantly, the remake substantially expanded Ashley’s playable sections, culminating in a haunting encounter with armored creatures in a crypt. This newly discovered Chapter 0 suggests the development team had even more ambitious plans for Ashley’s character arc before content was cut.
This restoration effort represents an interesting case of game preservation, where the modding community has completed abandoned content. The fact that development assets remained in the game files allowed dedicated fans to piece together what would otherwise have remained inaccessible, highlighting how modern game development often leaves behind substantial content that never reaches players.
