EXCLUSIVE: How Roco Kingdom Takes ‘Shiny’ Hunting To The Next Level

Roco Kingdom, a creature-capture game that has been popular in China for 16 years, is entering the western market with a distinctive approach to rare variant collecting. The game features creatures called Jinies that players capture while exploring an open world.

Like other creature-capture titles such as Pokémon’s Shiny variants and Palworld’s Lucky Pals, Roco Kingdom includes rare chromatic variants available for players to discover. However, the game differentiates itself through a unique mechanic that obscures the rarity reveal from players.

According to the game’s narrative director Xiaoye, who shared details with Insider Gaming at Gamescom, the chromatic Jinies system functions as “a layer of a surprise gift.” Players exploring the world may obtain an extremely rare chromatic variant without immediately knowing it, with the full reveal held back until later. This design creates an element of mystery and delayed gratification in the shiny-hunting experience.

The hidden-reveal system represents an innovation in the creature-capture genre’s approach to rare variant hunting, adding an additional layer of surprise to a mechanic that has become integral to player engagement in similar titles.
