Cloud Imperium delays Squadron 42 to 2027 – “There is no way I want to launch into the attention buzz saw of GTA 6”

Cloud Imperium Games has announced a delay for Squadron 42, the single-player campaign spin-off of Star Citizen, pushing the release to Q2 2027. CEO and co-founder Chris Roberts cited strategic scheduling, stating the company wants to avoid launching during the “attention buzz saw of Grand Theft Auto 6.” Roberts emphasized that Squadron 42 “needs the opportunity to have the focus of the wider gaming world,” rather than being overshadowed by Rockstar’s flagship franchise.

The game, described by Roberts as his “spiritual successor to Wing Commander,” has been in development since 2014, representing over twelve years of investment. The delay reflects broader industry considerations about market timing and audience attention during major releases.

Squadron 42 is positioned as the narrative-driven, single-player campaign component of Star Citizen, Cloud Imperium’s ambitious multiplayer space simulation. The postponement to mid-2027 provides additional development time while allowing the market landscape to shift away from GTA 6’s expected launch window, positioning the game for clearer market positioning and audience focus.
