Warlock’s magic system was built on game-bending player choices
Invoke Studios is developing Warlock, a new title set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe designed to capture the same chaotic energy that made Baldur’s Gate 3 a cultural phenomenon. However, unlike Baldur’s Gate 3, Warlock is being developed as a single-player action-adventure experience rather than a traditional role-playing game, presenting a unique challenge in translating D&D’s essence to this format.
Led by Invoke Studios founder and veteran Dungeon Master Jeff Hattem, the development team has prioritized building a magic system around emergent player choice and discovery. Rather than treating unexpected or unbalanced interactions as bugs, the developers intentionally embrace them as features—allowing players to discover creative spell combinations and tactics that fundamentally reshape their gameplay experience.
Wizards of the Coast, which owns the D&D intellectual property, is hoping Warlock can replicate the audience engagement and critical acclaim that Baldur’s Gate 3 achieved, while establishing its own identity through its action-adventure design philosophy. The game represents an experimental approach to adapting tabletop RPG principles into a new genre format.
