Chinese memory maker YMTC wants to dethrone Samsung and SK hynix by the end of 2027

Chinese memory manufacturer YMTC has set an ambitious goal to reshape the semiconductor industry. According to the Financial Times, citing sources with knowledge of the matter, YMTC has told investors it aims to become the world’s leading NAND flash memory producer by the end of 2027, surpassing current market leaders Samsung and SK Hynix.

The announcement arrives amid an ongoing global memory crisis that has severely impacted supplies of both NAND flash storage and DRAM chips used in computers and other devices. YMTC has benefited significantly from these market conditions in recent years, particularly in the NAND sector, capitalizing on supply shortages to increase its production and revenue.

However, achieving the company’s stated objective would require more than doubling its current market share within approximately 18 months—an extraordinarily aggressive expansion strategy in a highly competitive market dominated by established, well-capitalized players. This bold claim underscores intensifying competition in the critical semiconductor memory space and reflects broader industry trends toward market consolidation and the emergence of new competitors in essential hardware components.
