Baldur’s Gate 3’s Astarion Is Getting an Official Prequel Novel

Wizards of the Coast and Random House Worlds have announced a publishing partnership to expand Baldur’s Gate 3 into novel form. The collaboration will release four titles in 2026, with additional books planned for 2027 and beyond.

The first novel, Baldur’s Gate 3: Astarion, launches September 29, 2026, written by award-winning New York Times bestselling fantasy author T. Kingfisher. The prequel follows Astarion, one of the game’s most popular characters, exploring his backstory prior to the events of the 2023 RPG.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a critical and commercial phenomenon, earning Game of the Year at all five major award ceremonies. The game’s richly developed characters and immersive storytelling have cultivated a devoted international fanbase, making it well-suited for expanded universe content. This publishing initiative reflects a broader industry trend of translating successful video game narratives into traditional media formats, deepening fan engagement and extending intellectual properties across multiple entertainment mediums.
