Gamescom Team Addresses Theft Reports From Show Floor
Multiple indie game developers have reported significant equipment theft at Gamescom 2026, raising serious concerns about event security at the Koelnmesse in Cologne. At least three exhibitors reported having their equipment stolen from the expo floor overnight, with the incident occurring in areas that were supposed to have restricted access and continuous security monitoring.
The theft was first reported by Ryan Laley, a solo developer showcasing the game Mimic, who discovered that their laptop and accessories had been stolen from the monitored expo area. Tessera Studios also reported stolen equipment during the same incident, along with at least one other exhibitor. According to reports, the equipment was taken overnight from sections of the event that should have been under constant guard.
The incident has drawn criticism not only for the theft itself but also for what attendees describe as incompetence and complacency among Gamescom’s security personnel. Multiple social media reports have surfaced detailing inadequate security oversight at the event.
In response, the Gamescom organization issued a statement acknowledging the thefts, with security described as “one of the highest priorities” to the event organizers. However, the response has been poorly received by attendees and exhibitors. The organization’s statement—posted on social media—did not offer any compensation to the affected indie developers or studios, leaving exhibitors frustrated with both the security failure and the inadequate response.
For indie developers operating with limited budgets, the loss of exhibition equipment represents not only a financial setback but also a disruption to their ability to showcase their work at a major industry event.
